2nd Death Reported at Southern Illinois Developmental Center

CENTRALIA, Ill. (AP) — A second resident’s death is under investigation at a southern Illinois home for adults with developmental disabilities, less than one week after another death there led to a state police inquiry.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that 56-year-old Gary Farris was pronounced dead at a Centralia hospital Saturday after he was found unresponsive in bed at the state-operated Warren G. Murray Developmental Center in Marion County.

Forty-six-year-old Murray Center resident Todd Clementz died at the same hospital on March 30. The Illinois Department of Human Services is also investigating both deaths, which appear to be unrelated.

Two Murray Center employees were put on leave when an initial review of the first resident’s death revealed inconsistent statements from staffers.
