American White Pelicans Back at Kane County Forest Preserve

BATAVIA, Ill. (AP) — American white pelicans are stopping over at a Kane County forest preserve for the 15th year as they migrate northward.

Staff members at the Dick Young Forest Preserve in Batavia say they’ve spotted several of the large white birds in a marsh area on Nelson Lake.

The Chicago Tribune reports as many as 250 pelicans at a time have been spotted on Nelson Lake in the past. Officials say the birds typically stay for two to three weeks before continuing their northward migration, which has shifted eastward over time.

American white pelicans have white bodies with black-tipped wings, long beaks and 9-foot wingspans.

They winter on the coasts and fly north in the spring to nest along waterways in Canada, the Great Plains and western mountain states.
