Suburban Cousins to be Arraigned in Islamic State Case

CHICAGO (AP) — An Illinois Army National Guard soldier and his cousin are scheduled for arraignment on charges they plotted terrorist attacks in a conspiracy to provide material support to the Islamic State group.

The 22-year-old guardsman, Hasan Edmonds, and 29-year-old Jonas Edmonds are expected to enter pleas during Wednesday’s hearing in U.S. District Court in Chicago. Both men are from Aurora.

A complaint says the plan was for Jonas Edmonds to attack an Illinois military base after his cousin traveled abroad to join Islamic State. Hasan Edmonds allegedly vowed at one point to bring “the flames of war to the heart” of America.

Agents arrested Hasan last month as he tried to board a plane in Chicago. They arrested Jonas in Aurora hours later. If convicted, they face a maximum 15-year prison term.
