US Steel to Lay Off Thousands in Illinois

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (AP) — Thousands of southern Illinois steel workers who are expected to lose their jobs soon could benefit from training and counselling to get them back to work.

The Belleville News Democrat reports Madison County officials are working with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to provide assistance to the soon-to-be unemployed workers of U.S. Steel’s Granite City plant near St. Louis.

U.S. Steel Corp. announced the layoffs and temporary closure of the Illinois steel plant last month because of falling oil prices and cheaper steel imports from overseas.

The worker assistance will provide help securing insurance, unemployment benefits and job retraining. Details have yet to be released about when and where the training will be available.

U.S. Steel has operations in the U.S., Canada and Europe.
