Authorities Investigate Family of Girl Found Alone

CHICAGO (AP) — The Cook County sheriff’s department says it’s investigating the family of a 3-year-old girl who was found alone near a suburban Chicago forest preserve.

A sheriff’s official says the girl named Aliya has been placed with a family member after being identified late Tuesday. A passer-by found the girl in suburban Prospect Heights.

In addition to the sheriff’s department, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is also looking into the child’s family. Andrew Flach said Wednesday that DCFS had no prior contact with the family.

Cook County sheriff’s spokeswoman Cara Smith says the father of the child is incarcerated in another state. The remainder of the family lives in Lake County.

Smith said there is a wide range of criminal charges that may be pending, including child abandonment.
