Hail, Heavy Rain, Damaging Winds Headed to Illinois

CHICAGO (AP) — Forecasters say nearly all of Illinois is at some risk of large hail, damaging winds, heavy rain and possibly tornadoes.

The National Weather Service says the highest threat will form during storms late Thursday afternoon and early evening.

The strong storms moving across the Plains toward the Appalachians presented 57 million people in its path with the first widespread bout of severe weather this year.

North-central and northeast Illinois could experience wind gusts of 70 mph, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and isolated tornadoes. Hail up to 2 inches in diameter is also possible.

Parts of Vermilion County in eastern Illinois are under a flash flood warning until noon.

Emergency officials reported street flooding in Danville. A much wider swath of central and southern Illinois is under a less severe flood watch.
