Illinois Woman to Earn First Specialty Chemistry Degree

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) — An Illinois college student is on track to become the first in the U.S. to earn a new specialty chemistry degree.

But rather than using her bachelor’s in chemical microscopy to become a crime scene investigator, Marissa Bartz of Quincy wants to get into art conservation.

The 22-year-old says she’s interested in both art and science, and her degree, along with a minor in art history,  neatly combines the two.

Chemical microscopy involves the use of high-tech microscopes to solve chemistry problems.

In the field of conservation, it can be used to analyze the makeup of valuable paintings and other artwork.

Bartz is studying at North Central College in Naperville.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reports that it’s the only U.S. college offering a four-year degree in the specialty.
