District 205 Approves Re-Classification of Athletic Director

henningThe District 205 School Board met yesterday to all but finalize a personnel issue that stems back to early March.

Galesburg High School Athletic Director Ralph Henning was re-classified from his current position yesterday, following a unanimous vote by school board members.

However, there is one more step in the process. That’s according to Superintendent Bart Arthur, who tells WGIL that Henning will now have five days to file an appeal of the decision.

“According to the statute, there is an agreement that there are five more days, and then if he desires, he can request an open meeting,” says Arthur. “We’ll give him the five days to see if he requests it, and then we’ll set up a time. I suppose that he could bring witnesses and testify according to what he feels are his strengths and those sorts of things.”

Henning and his legal team were present yesterday. Prior to the decision, the board met with him in a private hearing.

Henning was notified of the vote, following a March 9th decision by the board to make the move. He then had 10 days to file for a hearing, and although he missed the deadline, board members granted yesterday’s hearing.

Former teacher and coach Steve Cheesman has been filling in as interim athletic director since last month. Arthur says if Henning does not appeal, the district will begin searching for a new AD.
