Galesburg Clean Up Days Scheduled To Start Monday

Galesburg-city-signIf you’re traveling through Galesburg next week and come across piles of unwanted items lining the streets–don’t be alarmed.

The city will host a week of Clean up Days starting this coming Monday. Residents are encouraged to clean out attics, garages, basements, and backyards on their specified refuse day, in order to get rid of any large unwanted items. The final day to participate will be April 17th.

That’s according to Associate Planner Julie Main, who says event is a great way for people to do some Spring cleaning.

Main tells the WGIL Evening News that essentially, the week is planned so that residents have an easier time properly preparing to discard the waste.

“It’s wonderful that we have this opportunity to say in the Spring and the Fall that you don’t have to worry about it being under 50 pounds in weight, you don’t have to worry about making a bundle under five feet in length,” says Main. “It’s really great to have an opportunity for people to get rid of furniture, some appliances–you know, oversized items. I want to remind people–it has to fit in the garbage truck.”

Main says there are some restrictions. Items like liquid paint, auto batteries, concrete chunks, and tires will not be accepted. Some electronics are off limit as well. Computers, TV’s, VCR’s and DVD players will not be disposed of in the landfill.

Residents are reminded that scavenging curbside items is not allowed. Violators can be fined for rummaging.
