Chicago Police Stumble Onto a Murder Case

CHICAGO (AP) — Cook County prosecutors say Chicago police officers stumbled upon a homicide while attempting to deliver news a stolen auto had been recovered.

Officers got on an elevator Wednesday with Robert Hill. They exited on the same floor and headed for the same apartment. Officers found the door open to 56-year-old Sandra Fellows’ apartment and asked Hill, her boyfriend, where she was.

Hill allegedly said the woman died the previous day and he was there to dispose of the body.

Assistant State’s Attorney Akash Vyas said Friday that Fellows’ body was found lying face up on the floor. The 33-year-old Hill allegedly told police he smothered her Tuesday after she received money from a life-insurance policy without telling him.

Hill had taken Fellows’ auto to his mother’s house. It had been reported stolen by a relative of Fellows.

Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil set bail at $3 million for Hill. It wasn’t immediately known if he has legal representation.
