Several Hundred Protest Police Shooting of Illinois Teen

ZION, Ill. (AP) — Several hundred people have marched through the northern Illinois city of Zion to protest the fatal shooting of a teenager by a police officer.

The (Waukegan) News-Sun reports that the peaceful crowd formed a prayer circle Saturday at the intersection where the shooting took place.

Seventeen-year-old Justus Howell of Waukegan was shot twice in the back last weekend by a Zion police officer. Police say Howell was involved in a scuffle while trying to steal a handgun during a street sale just before the officer shot him.

Howell family spokesman Al Rogers said Saturday’s protest was about highlighting “the climate and conditions that causes this to happen.”

Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim says he is closely monitoring the investigation and that he has asked the FBI to do the same.
