Knox County Fair Could See Funding After All

7-20-14 Knox County FairAlthough it may be significantly less than in years past, the Knox County Fair could receive state funding after all.

That’s according to Fairgrounds President Tom Collopy, who says that according to a source he spoke with last week–there is money in the 2016 Fiscal Year budget for fairs.

Fairground board members received a letter from the state two weeks ago, saying they would have all premiums and refund money suspended.

However, that could be reversed barring state legislature passed. The amount received is “up in the air at this point.”

Collopy tells the WGIL Midday, that Knox County differs from certain fairs in the state who have already received their money for this year.

“It’s kind of weird, because the state budget is July 1st to June 30th,” says Collopy. “The normal year–ours is January 1st to December 31st, so it’s really kind of in the middle. The fairs that had it in June–they have already gotten their money because they were in last years budget, but the July fairs and on, they were in this years budget.”

Fairgrounds board member Darcy Thorp has said funding has been near $67,000 in the past 10 years. Thorp says as it stands, the fair is not currently operating in the red.
