Victims, Volunteers Fill Pews After Illinois Tornadoes

KIRKLAND, Ill. (AP) — Some of the victims of deadly tornadoes that swept through northern Illinois last week spent Sunday at church services.

The Chicago Tribune reports  that the Rev. Kay Woo thanked those in the pews Sunday morning at Kirkland United Methodist Church. The town of Kirkland is just 5 miles east of Fairdale, where two people died in Thursday’s storms. Woo also expressed gratitude for members who chose to volunteer instead.

A half dozen pastors planned to gather at the church Sunday evening for a prayer service. Woo called it “an expression of the beginning of our long term care and support.”

The Rev. Tommy Creutz is a pastor at Harvest Bible Chapel in Elgin. He says he brought 20 volunteers from the suburban church.
