AG Madigan's Office Warns Against Home Repair Scams

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is warning against home repair scams after deadly tornadoes struck northern Illinois last week.

Her office says con artists can try to exploit homeowners and local businesses needing repairs due to storm damage.

Madigan says in a statement Monday that she’s filed four such lawsuits in previous cases where homeowners in suburban Chicago and central Illinois were allegedly cheated out of more than $220,000.

Madigan says her office will be investigating complaints received from impacted areas and overseeing a registration process. Communities with the worst damage included Fairdale and Rochelle.

Her tips include being wary of those who go door-to-door offering repair services. She also advises shopping around for the best deal and to never pay in cash.
