Danville Schools May Ban Sweets at Parties, Fundraisers

DANVILLE, Ill. (AP) — School board members in Danville are expected later this month to consider prohibiting pizza, cupcakes, cookies and other foods considered unhealthy from being sold during fundraisers or eaten during school parties.

According to The News-Gazette in Champaign, school district food-service director Greg Lazzell plans to propose the changes during a board meeting Wednesday. School board members in the eastern Illinois school district are expected to vote later this month.

A committee of school staff, parents and community members recommended the changes to bring the district into compliance with the federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.

Lazzell said the district has complied with most of the law, but still needs to tighten up what is sold to raise funds for school groups and food that parents sometimes bring in for parties.
