Man Arrested for Burglary at Knox County Courthouse

knox county courthouseA local man reportedly broke into the Knox County Courthouse this past weekend–for the second time in a 11 years.

64-year-old Howard Campbell of Galesburg was apprehended at his home yesterday afternoon.
Campbell allegedly broke into the courthouse between 1 and 2 a.m. Sunday, after he forced open a window leading to the basement.

Once he entered the building, Campbell broke into the buildings’ traffic and treasurers offices. He reportedly exited with a small amount of coins. Authorities also found the glass on the door of the traffic division shattered.

Following a review of surveillance footage, and an investigation of clothing found in Campbell’s home–it was determined that the man was allegedly the same burglar who made away with nearly $9,550 in cash, checks, and money orders following a similar break-in to the courthouse in 2004. Campbell was convicted of burglary charges in 2005. He is currently being charged with one count of burglary and could face up to seven years in prison.

Campbell is being held in Knox County jail, and will face his first court appearance this afternoon.
