Chicago Council Expected To Approve $5M for Shooting Case

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago City Council is expected to approve a $5 million settlement in the death of a teenager who was shot by a police officer 16 times last October.

Laquan McDonald was fatally shot as he wielded a knife. The settlement in his death comes after federal authorities confirmed the FBI was conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting. The council will take up the settlement at its Wednesday meeting.

Also during the meeting the council’s Finance Committee will have a hearing on a proposed ordinance that would pay $5.5 million in reparations to torture victims of former police commander Jon Burge.

The council also is expected to approve $250,000 to settle a lawsuit that accuses police and prosecutors of covering up the death of David Koschman.
