Ebertfest Set To Begin in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Artist Rick Harney was busy this week sprucing up the Roger Ebert statue outside the Virginia Theatre in Champaign for the start of Ebertfest.

The annual film festival started by the late Chicago Sun-Times movie critic opens Wednesday and runs through Sunday at the theater.

Harney told The News-Gazette in Champaig,  that the year-old statue is looking good.

The statue was installed last year after the 16th edition of the festival and has become a local icon that people enjoy posing with for pictures. The statue features Ebert in a movie seat giving his trademark thumbs up.

This year’s version of the festival opens with the 3D film “Goodbye to Language.”

Ebert is a native of Urbana. He died in 2013.
