Former Chicago Clerk Pleads Guilty to Stealing City Funds

CHICAGO (AP) — A former clerk for the city of Chicago has pleaded guilty to charges she stole about $741,000 in taxpayer money for personal use.

Antionette Chenier of Midlothian on Tuesday told U.S. District Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan that she stole payments meant for Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communication between August 2008 and January 2014. She was working for the city’s Department of Transportation at the time.

In addition to stealing, the 51-year-old Chenier pleaded guilty to tax evasion. She admitted to filing a false tax return claiming $Sa52,043 in adjusted gross income in 2012. In fact, she’d taken $166,885 in city funds that year.

Der-Yeghiayan scheduled Chenier’s sentencing for Sept. 10. Prosecutors say she could face as many as 15 years in prison.
