Illinois Lawmakers: Rauner Must Offer Pension Plan Soon

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Public-pension experts in the Illinois Legislature say time is running out for Gov. Bruce Rauner to put forward a cost-saving retirement plan that can be part of next year’s state budget.

Democratic Rep. Elaine Nekritz of Northbrook and Sen. Daniel Biss of Evanston said Tuesday they want Rauner to present specific numbers for his plan for outside analysis.

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly says Rauner’s plan to save $2 billion annually by reducing pension benefits spares the state’s “financial future,” and there is time before the May 31st adjournment deadline to do it.
Illinois retirement plans are $111 billion in debt.

The Supreme Court is deciding the constitutionality of a pension fix that lawmakers approved in 2013.
