Proposal To Allow Fireworks Goes to Effingham County Board

EFFINGHAM, Ill. (AP) — A proposal to allow fireworks sales is moving forward to a vote by the full Effingham County Board.

The Effingham Daily News reports a board committee voted 8-1 Monday that the full board should hear the proposal next week. The proposed ordinance would legalize the purchase of Class C fireworks such as firecrackers and bottle rockets.

Illinois law bans nearly all fireworks with the exception of novelties. But Effingham County State’s Attorney Bryan Kibler says there’s some “gray area” in Illinois fireworks law as to whether a municipality can supersede state law. County board members say the law allows municipalities to enact their own permit regulations.

Health and fire officials oppose the proposal and say allowing fireworks sales could result in more injuries.
