Southern Illinois Coal Mine Idled by Elevated Gas Levels

HILLSBORO, Ill. (AP) — A southern Illinois coal mine shuttered for several weeks last summer from an underground fire remains idled by elevated carbon monoxide levels.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says it continues to monitor Foresight Energy LP’s Deer Run Mine, which is located 65 miles north of St. Louis near Hillsboro.

The St. Louis-based company evacuated the mine in late March. No injuries were reported, and the company says it doesn’t expect an interruption in coal delivery.

The shutdown follows a July 14 mine fire that temporarily curtailed production at Deer Run.

The company said in a statement that the gas levels have since declined as it awaits approval by the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration to resume operations
