Springfield Remembers Lincoln on Anniversary of His Death

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Speakers at a service commemorating President Abraham Lincoln’s death say his influence is as relevant and as felt today as it was more than 150 years ago.

Wednesday’s service in Springfield’s Union Park marked the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s death.

The ceremony included a 21-gun salute from members of the Navy, a flag presentation by sailors of the USS Abraham Lincoln and remarks from motivational speaker and comedian Tom Dreesen.

Dreesen says most people know Lincoln’s brilliance and troubled life but fewer have heard about his sense of humor. He says Lincoln often made himself the butt of the joke.

The entertainer says Lincoln was a man of many great attributes but his sense of humor “might have been his greatest.”
