Alternatives Organization Saving State Funds

An area organization operating in 10 Illinois Counties is saving state money while helping those in need.

Alternatives, also known as Alternatives for the older adult, reportedly saves the state around $14 Million dollars per year by providing services to keep elderly in their homes–instead of being placed into assisted care facilities.

That’s according to CEO Kathy Weiman, who says Alternatives connects with nearly 18,000 older adults throughout its provision area.

Weiman tells the WGIL Evening News, that the amount of services needed in Knox County, is a number that is quickly growing.

“Primarily in this area, we have the fastest growing area of our services, and that’s out of Knox County,” says Weiman. “Our offices have grown, our staff numbers have grown because we’re serving so many. We will connect with one in five older adults each year. They will either call us, or we’ll be doing a home visit in their home to kind of talk to them about the challenges they are having, and what we can help them connect with–or resources to help them stay in their home.”

Weiman says the organization employs around 80 staff members–15 of which operate in Galesburg. A number of those individuals act as investigators into nursing home abuse and neglect–another key aspect of the organization. Weiman says within the last year, Alternatives began working with mentally disabled individuals as well.
