Burge Expresses Disbelief Over Torture Victims Compensation

CHICAGO (AP) — Disgraced Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge is expressing disbelief the city has established a fund to compensate alleged victims of torture at his hands.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Burge confirmed he told a blogger he finds it “hard to believe” the city’s leadership would even contemplate giving reparations to “human vermin” like the “guilty, vicious criminals” he tried to take off the streets. The Sun-Times reports Burge refused to answer questions about his comments.

The Chicago City Council, with the support of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, this week created a $5.5 million “reparations” fund to compensate torture victims.

Burge has never been criminally charged with torture, but he was convicted in 2010 of lying about it in a civil case. He served a 4 1/2-year sentence in federal prison.
