U of Illinois Graduate Gives $12 Million for Center

URBANA, Ill. (AP) — A University of Illinois graduate who is CEO of a Taiwan-based technology company has given the university $12 million to pay for an addition to the school’s Mechanical Engineering Building.

The university said Friday that construction of the new Sidney Lu Center is expected to start in 2017 along with renovation of the Mechanical Engineering Building. The Lu Center will be a five-story, 36,000 square-foot addition to the building.

The university is spending $11 million on the renovation project.

Lu is CEO of Foxconn Interconnect Technology. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1981 with degrees in mechanical engineering and mathematics.
