Man Who Fled After Fatal Hit-and-Run Extradited to Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) — A man who fled the U.S. following a fatal 2009 hit-and-run has appeared in court in Chicago after being extradited from Mexico.

The Chicago Tribune reports Carlos Castillo made his first appearance in Cook County Court on Friday. He’s facing trial for the death of 25-year-old Rachel Gilliam.

Castillo was among multiple fugitives located by The Chicago Tribune as part of a series on suspects who flee the U.S. to evade trial for murder and other felonies.

During an interview in Mexico, Castillo told reporters he was drinking the night of the accident. He says he remembers getting behind the wheel of his car but doesn’t recall hitting anyone.

Castillo’s extradition to the U.S. last week follows years of discussions between U.S. and Mexican authorities.
