City Council to Consider Community Center Funds Tonight

1-20-15 Galesburg City CouncilGalesburg City Council members could move on naming a city community center tonight.

Allocating $115,000 in funds to upgrade the Boys & Girls Club of Knox County was tabled two weeks ago–and could be passed on again tonight.

Various aldermen have suggested waiting until the new council is seated on May 4th.

If the Boys & Girls Club is approved as the center, nearly $88,500 dollars in upgrades will be made to the club’s furnace, boiler, and air conditioning systems.

The funds would come from the sale of the cities previous community center, which was sold off in 2013.

Some disagreement regarding where the center should be located has been mentioned as well.

Fifth Ward Alderman Peter Schwartzman and Sixth Ward Alderman Sixth Ward Wayne Allen have both suggested renovating the Broad Street Armory.

The decision however, would require $500,000 worth of work–exceeding funds the council has determined for use.

Meanwhile, council members are expected to vote on the approval of renovating the Public Safety Building. Under the current proposed bid, the project would cost $54,000.
