City Council Tables Community Center Following Vote

1-20-15 Galesburg City CouncilThe naming of a city community center will have to wait until May 4th, even though a vote in favor of allocating funds was made last night.

The Galesburg City Council voted 3-2 to fund the Boys & Girls Club of Knox County as the new center, however, four votes were needed to pass the motion.

Aldermen Wayne Dennis and Ken Goad were both absent last night. Goad missed his final meeting, as newcomer Angela Bastian will be seated on the 4th.

Regardless, a vote was made. Ward 7 Alderman Jeremy Karlin suggested the vote last night. Karlin explained that the club needs the funds, otherwise they may not stay open.

“This is a place that without our assistance may go under,” says Karlin. “They are in need of significant capital improvements, that this proposal offers. In addition, they can be doing us a favor. They could be providing what we used to have for a community center. They can provide those services, through as much time as the community develops as vision for what a community center is.”

Meanwhile, council members approved and passed a bid for renovations to the Public Safety Building. The $54,000 cost will be paid by the police department out of it’s forfeiture fund.
