District 205 Board Approves Curriculum Committee in Final Meeting

d 205 other board photoThe current District 205 School Board met for the final time last night, where board members approved a district Curriculum Committee despite some criticism.

Board Vice President Robert Lindstrom was the lone no vote–citing concerns about the committees creation and members.

Lindstrom says he believes the board itself should continue to make decisions a committee would make, instead of extending discussion outside of the elected board.

“We’re the people that are in charge of the learning for the boys and girls of this district,” says Lindstrom. “It’s our job to hire a superintendent, who’s in charge  of learning–and it’s his job to employ other administrators that know that job and know about curriculum.”

Lindstrom described his concern in regard to committee attendance by non-board members, as well. Board Member Josh Gibb described his opinion as essentially the opposite of Lindstrom’s. Gibb says including teachers, and parents on the committee, is a good way to hear a different perspective.

Meanwhile, it was announced that Human Resources Director Diane VanHootegem will step down to become an outreach worker at King Elementary. Last night’s meeting was also the final meeting for board members Thomas Colclasure, Molly Palmer, Natalie Kessler, and Board President Mike Panther. Panther leaves the board following 17 years of service as President.
