Visitation for Chicago’s Cardinal George Begins Tuesday

CHICAGO (AP) — Mourners are expected at Chicago’s Holy Name Cathedral for a visitation for the late Cardinal Francis George.

George died Friday at age 78 after a long battle with cancer. His visitation is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the downtown Chicago cathedral. It will last until 11 p.m. and is open to the public. Also Thursday priests and seminarians plan a prayer vigil for the late cardinal.

Pope John Paul II appointed George in 1997. The native Chicagoan retired in the fall of 2014, a few months before announcing his treatment for kidney cancer had failed. He was replaced by Archbishop Blase Cupich.

George’s funeral Mass will be Thursday. Visitation hours also are scheduled Wednesday.
