Classrooms Explore Black History Month Through Video Contest

Black History MonthTeachers from various classrooms throughout District 205 were honored at Monday night’s school board meeting for aiding students in a special project this past February.

The winners from the Black History Month Video Contest were announced. The district had teamed up with the Galesburg NAACP chapter to encourage students to learn about African-American history through new technology.
NAACP President Candy Webb says “the project was a lot of fun.”

Webb tells WGIL, that the organization wanted to involve the district’s recent chromebook purchase this year.

“We try to do something for the school district every Black History Month,” says Webb. “This time we thought with the addition of the chromebooks–let’s try to do something that’s technology driven that the kids can really get involved with, and the teachers–and reward the teachers–so we came up with the idea of a video contest.”

Classes reportedly submitted 30 to 60 second videos, demonstrating what Black History Month or Juneteenth meant to them. Webb says classes from elementary school, junior high school, and high school all participated in the event. The winning classrooms received a pizza party, and the teachers received a $50 check in recognition.

A video montage of some of the winning videos was shown at Monday’s meeting. Teacher’s were presented their checks as well.
