Monmouth College Professor Reflects on 49 Years of Teaching

urbanA professor at Monmouth College is retiring after 49 years of employment at the school.

William Urban will step down from the faculty in May. Urban has primarily taught Medieval and European History since 1966, when he began his career.

The professor is also an award winning writer, producing nearly two dozen books on Eastern European History and Warfare. In 1979,

Urban also wrote a detailed history of Monmouth College–as part of a project to document the school in its second century.

Urban says throughout the years, he’s traveled the world and taught abroad in countries such as Italy, Germany, and the Czech Republic. He tells WGIL, that an upcoming lecture he is scheduled to give, will not be about his success–but of the people who have made an impact on his life.

“I’m going to talk about people I’ve known,” says Urban. “I’ve traveled a lot–and that’s important–but life is mostly effected by the people you meet, and not the places you go. I’ve met some absolutely marvelous people here at Monmouth College. I could have left, but I din’t want to get stuck teaching the same thing over and over again at a state university.”

Urban says he plans to continue teaching part time, as well as travel to see friends in his retirement. Urban’s lecture will be held Friday on campus at 4 p.m. It is open to the public.
