Quincy Native Looks to Name Naval Ship for Former President

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) — A Quincy native and retired U.S. Navy captain wants to honor his hometown’s namesake by naming a ship after former President John Quincy Adams as the Illinois city celebrates its 175th anniversary.

The Quincy Herald-Whig  reports that three naval ships were previously named the USS Quincy after the Massachusetts town named for Colonel John Quincy, Abigail Adams’ grandfather. She would later marry John Adams, the second U.S. president.

Kevin Wensing says he has also reached out to 10 other communities nationwide named for John Quincy Adams, including the one in Massachusetts.

The last USS Quincy was launched in 1943, decommissioned 11 years later and scrapped in 1974.
