A Galesburg man who allegedly broke into the Knox County Courthouse two weeks ago faced his first court appearance for the crime yesterday.
64-year-old Howard D. Campbell faces charges of burglary, theft, and criminal damage to government property. If convicted of the burglary charge, that alone could carry up to a seven year sentence.
Campbell was arrested at his home April 13th. The Galesburg resident allegedly entered the courthouse late at night on April 12th, where he broke in through a basement window.
Campbell is suspected of breaking into the traffic and treasurers office, where he reportedly made away with a small amount of change.
If Campbell is convicted, this will reportedly be the second courthouse burglary in 11 years–both of which were committed by Campbell.
A judge sentenced him to six and a half years for stealing $9,550 in a combination of cash, checks, and money orders.
Campbell will be back in court for a preliminary hearing May 5th for his current charges. He currently remains in Knox County Jail on $100,000 bond.
