Chicago Committee OKs Plan Relaxing Drag Show Zoning Rules

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago zoning committee has given preliminary approval to a measure allowing male and female impersonators to perform in city establishments without being classified as “adult entertainment.”

The measure is being pushed by Alderman Tom Tunney whose ward includes businesses where several businesses host drag shows. He said Thursday that changing the definition of “adult entertainment” helps local businesses who want to host impersonator shows but can’t because of strict standards applied to strip clubs.

The matter is expected before the full City Council next month.

Years ago, the City Council took impersonator shows out of the adult entertainment section of the zoning code, but the shows still remained in business affairs rules for licenses.

Tunney says approving the change would show that it’s more accepted and entertainment for everybody.
