City Plants Maple Tree at GHS in Celebration of Arbor Day

arbor day GHSGalesburg City officials were on hand this morning at Galesburg High School to plant a new tree in celebration of National Arbor Day.

The city parks department planted a King Maple with the help of Jen Good’s AP Biology class–who have been caring for a number of trees on the school’s property.

Parks and Recreation Director Larry Cox says the city has planted a tree around the city on this day for the past 15 years.

Galesburg was recently named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation–an award that has been received 15 straight years as well.

Ms. Good tells WGIL that for GHS, planting and caring for the trees on campus is an important task to help keep students cool on warm days.

“Aside from the aesthetics of it, we of course don’t have air conditioning in the building,” says Good. “The south side of the building sees a lot of heat through the windows–the south facing windows. Students, especially on the second level, get warm up there–so–making sure we have trees to keep the building climate more comfortable for the students is important.”

Both Good and Cox explained that new trees will continue to replace the removal of a number of emerald ash trees throughout the city and on campus. Good says GHS will need to have at least 18 emerald ashes removed and replaced.
