Guard Sentenced in Chicago for Stealing Inmates’ Identities

CHICAGO (AP) — A federal judge in Chicago has sentenced a former prison guard to three years behind bars for stealing inmates’ identities, then using them to seek refunds from the Internal Revenue Service.

Cornelius Crumity, of Pembroke Pines, Florida, worked at the Miami Dade County Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. An alleged co-conspirator lived in Illinois and the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago handled the case.
A judge sentenced the 39-year-old Thursday.

Prosecutors accuse Crumity of stealing at least 50 inmate identities in a bid to secure a total of around $350,000 in refunds between 2008 and 2011.

At the prison, Crumity had access to prisoner records, including social security numbers. The false returns were submitted without inmates’ knowledge.

Crumity pleaded guilty last year to aggravated identity theft and mail fraud.
