Monmouth History Department Teaching “From the Documents Up”

Monmouth CollegeAn area college is educating students on campus through a rather unconventional curriculum—at least within one department.

The Monmouth College History Department now offers students its “History from the Documents Up” curriculum.

Student classes are scheduled with document study from freshman year on. Time period writings and documents studied as an underclassman are essentially expanded into greater detail, as students study historian perspective and have discussions of their own as juniors and seniors.

The new curriculum reportedly allows students and faculty to essentially be extremely specialized on certain topics.

That’s according to assistant professor Christine Myers, who recently took four students to a conference in New Orleans, where she presented a paper relating England and Scotland’s relationship in the 18th century, to that of the recent independence vote last September.

The curriculum was adopted by the college as a part of the school’s 4 to 4 academic calendar switch. The change has been in place since 2012.
