Chicago Mother of Earthquake Survivor Worries of His Return

CHICAGO (AP) – The Chicago mother of a mountain climber who survived a deadly earthquake in Nepal says she’s relieved but has lingering concerns about how her son will get off Mount Everest.

Loretta Land is Andy Land’s mother. He’s a hospice nurse from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. He was climbing with a team on Saturday when Nepal was hit by its worst temblor in decades. More than 2,500 people died. Loretta Land lives in Chicago. She tells The Associated Press her son’s work with hospice has prepared him for whatever he faces. But she says the quake has changed parts of the mountain’s terrain and it could be difficult to get down. Land says she and her son had discussed possibilities before the trip, including having to turn back before the summit.
