ISP investigates East St. Louis Housing Authority shooting

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) – Illinois State Police are investigating a shooting involving an East St. Louis Housing Authority police officer that left one man injured.

Captain James Morrisey says security guards were investigating burglaries on Saturday around 1 p.m. at a complex when they encountered a 20-year-old man. He was shot by a Housing Authority officer and taken to a hospital. The man’s injuries aren’t considered life-threatening. Cortez Slack is the chief of the Housing Authority’s police department. He says the shooting took place at John DeShields Homes. He says the officer has been put on paid administrative leave. Housing Authority officers receive training through the St. Clair County Sherriff’s Department. They have authority to make arrests and carry a gun.
