sandburg historic siteA weeks worth of events honoring one of Galesburg’s most famous natives culminated Saturday with national recognition.

Attendees gathered inside the barn theater of the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site for a dedication ceremony naming the site a Literary Landmark.

Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White authorized the dedication. According to a press release, he says he believes “the designation will bring people to the site for years to come.”

The Literary Landmark program through United for Libraries, generally administers the accolade in May as a part of Children’s Book Week.

Carl Sandburg Festival Coordinator Robin DeMott tells the WGIL Evening News, that the organization made an exception this year.

“I thought we were going to be competing with other potential literary landmarks in the state, but it was really will you partner with us, because we really want to dedicate the Sandburg Historic Site as a Literary Landmark,” says DeMott. “She could see from her research all that was happening in Galesburg with Sandburg–the statue, and the 20th annual and all of those amazing things. That’s really special.”

The Sandburg site joins more than 140 landmarks across the state. Others to be added this year include locations in Ohio, Rhode Island, Oklahoma and New York.
