Madigan Continues Push for Campus Sex Assault Protection

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Victims of campus sex assaults in Illinois would have confidential advisers to help guide them through the legal and medical systems under a legislative proposal that has won preliminary approval from state lawmakers.

The Preventing Sexual Violence in Higher Education Act is under consideration in the state Senate after the Illinois House approved it last week by a vote of 113-2.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan spoke in support of the legislation at a Monday conference on sex assault prevention at Southern Illinois University’s Edwardsville campus. She has held similar campus summits in Chicago and Normal.
Federal laws already require colleges and universities to follow certain guidelines for reporting and investigating possible sex assaults. But Madigan called those standards “scattered” and “ineffective” while she advocated for additional state protections.
