Work To Start Later This Year on Illinois Fertilizer Plant

TUSCOLA, Ill. (AP) — Corn and soybeans have been planted for the last season on a patch of land in rural eastern Illinois that’s to become the site of a $1.4 billion fertilizer plant.

Cronus Chemicals said last October that it would build the plant just outside Tuscola, a town about 20 miles south of Champaign.

The Cronus Fertilizers plant will employ about 175 people, while another 2,000 temporary construction jobs are expected to be created while the plant is being built.

Cronus spokesman Dave Lundy tells the (Champaign) News-Gazette that the company hasn’t set a specific date to start the project, but it will be this year. He anticipates the plant will be fully operational in 2018.

The 250-acre Tuscola site is primarily farm land that sits alongside a CSX rail line.
