2 Sentenced to Prison in Kidnapping Hoax at Champaign Mall

URBANA, Ill. (AP) — A woman must serve at least one year in prison for faking her own kidnapping at a Champaign mall last year.

The Champaign News-Gazette reports 20-year-old Monica Adriana Zacatlan Ramirez of Urbana has been sentenced to 18 months in prison. Twenty-six-year-old Eduardo Guerroro Cortez, who police say helped Ramirez in the hoax, was sentenced to 10 months in prison.

Both have been ordered to pay more than $45,000 in restitution to local and federal authorities for resources and expenses that each spent in their investigation.

Ramirez admitted to participating in her fake kidnapping in June 2014 so she could be with Cortez, whom her family didn’t approve of.

She and Cortez pleaded guilty in December to charges related to the crime.
