Appeal Likely After Court Upholds Assault Weapons Ban

CHICAGO (AP) — The president of the Illinois State Rifle Association says he expects an appeal of a court ruling upholding a Chicago suburb’s ban on assault weapons.

In a 2-1 decision, a panel of the 7th U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago on Monday declared Highland Park’s assault weapons ban constitutional.

The majority opinion says the ban doesn’t violate the Second Amendment because it gives would-be gun owners other options. That includes buying a handgun.

In a dissenting opinion, Judge Daniel A. Manion says individual citizens, not the government, should decide the most effective means of defense.

Richard Pearson is the Illinois State Rifle Association president. He says the ruling was expected.

Pearson says: “I’m sure there will be an appeal.”
