BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) — The central Illinois city of Bloomington is considering a plan to make its streets more bicycle-friendly.
The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports the City Council will vote May 11 on a proposed bicycle master plan.
The multi-year plan would create more dedicated bike lanes on city streets. It also calls for what are known as “sharrows,” or road markings that indicate a lane of traffic may be shared by bikes and cars.
Bike lanes also would connect to the Constitution Trail, a multi-use path through Bloomington and the adjacent city of Normal.
Bloomington Mayor Tari Renner says the plan would make the city more sustainable and is “good economics.” He says areas with bike baths typically have higher property values and bike lanes are an amenity that attracts millennials.
