Chicago Men Return From Nepal After Experiencing Earthquake

CHICAGO (AP) — Two Chicago men who were in Nepal during Saturday’s devastating earthquake say they’re grateful to be alive.

Dean Tatooles (tuh-TOO’-less) and Christopher Mundy (MUHN’-dee) returned to Chicago on Sunday.

The friends were aboard an airplane at the Kathmandu airport, ready to fly home after a photo trek in India and Nepal, when the 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit.

They say their plane began bouncing violently up and down on the tarmac as passengers screamed and clutched at seats. They say many appeared to be in shock as the plane was being evacuated.

The quake killed more than 4,000 people, including at least 18 who died when an avalanche swept through a Mt. Everest base camp.

It was the worst earthquake to hit the South Asian nation in more than 80 years.
