Hospital: Chicago Nurses Call Off Strike, Agreement Reached

CHICAGO (AP) — Officials at University of Chicago Medical Center say the hospital has reached a tentative agreement with a union representing registered nurses.

The hospital said Tuesday an agreement was reached just before midnight Monday. The hospital says National Nurses United has withdrawn its strike notice. The strike was scheduled for Thursday.

Neither side is discussing the terms until the agreement is in writing. The bargaining teams were working on the written contract Tuesday. Until the agreement, the sides disagreed on staffing levels, wages and other issues

Debra Albert of University of Chicago Medical Center says in an online update for staff that the agreement represents “a fair compromise by both sides.”

The agreement will need to be ratified by a vote of the nurses before it takes effect.
