Knoxville School Board Changes District Grading Scale

Knoxville School District LogoThe Knoxville School Board has approved the change of the grading scale for the district.

This change will take effect at the beginning of the next school year.

The current grading scale is more rigorous than the traditional ninety, eighty, seventy, sixty scale.

Superintendent Steve Wilder issued a survey to the community that asked if they were in favor of the new scale and if they were opposed to the old scale.

Wilder tells WGIL that the community had an overwhelming response in favor of the new scale.

“I think that our school district should reflect the values of the community, and this is a perfect example allowing us to be able to do that,” says Wilder. ” It was a black and white issue, and the results were overwhelming. At the end of the day is was a pretty straightforward recommendation.”

Some points brought up in discussion of the new scale were that students could slack off and still receive the same letter grade.

Concerns were brought up over scholarship and grade point average differences from other schools who used the less rigorous scale.

Wilder says that this could help students compete at the same level academically as other districts for college admittance and financial aid.

The newest member of the School Board, Rebecca McCracken, contributed to the unanimous vote to approve the change.
